Train for War
By Ben Heath

Our Heavenly Father loves each and every one of us very much and He wants us to be
somebody. He wants to nurture us, instruct us, and develop us into happy successful
servants who can go out and help others. There is no higher calling than being one of
God’s servants — a Christian.

The problem with Christians today is that many of them still need their diapers changed
and a pacifier to suck on. They are immature when it comes to spirituality. By that I mean
they have not matured into useful servants of God.

Oh, I know there are many who sit in the Pew every Sunday who say are Christians, but
how many of them train and discipline themselves in the Word of God?

We know that in a physical war, soldiers need training. It would be suicide to send them
out to battle without it. And so it is with the spiritual war that we are in. And many of our
Christian churches send their flocks straight to the slaughter by not training and preparing
them to be able to endure in this battle between Good and Evil.

In basic training, military soldiers are taught over and over again by their Drill Sergeants
that – COMPLACENCY KILLS!

And Christians today are complacent. Many of their teachers have told them that they
don
't need to understand the Book of Revelation because they will be “raptured away”
before the events of the last days. And many other teachers simply read a verse or two
from the Bible and then ramble on for an hour. You know, there are 31,102 verses in the
Bible. If you only read 2 verses every Sunday, the time it would take you to read the entire
Bible would be 598 years! That’s too long.

So what kind of training prepares us to withstand Evil in this troubled world? The answer of
course starts with studying and absorbing God’s Word both the Old and New Testament.
One who studies the Word of God on regular basis and is disciplined, obedient, and
faithful, will mature into a seasoned Christian soldier ready to endure anything that comes
their way.

An excellent example of spiritual training that we can learn from is the time when God
nourished, conditioned and trained the children of Israel in the wilderness as they
prepared to cross over the Jordan to cleanse the Promised Land of its wickedness and
dwell therein.

Before the Israelites could enter the Promised Land God had lots of work cut out for him.
He had to take an undisciplined disorderly mob of people and make them into both
physical and spiritual warriors. In the desert of Sinai, the Israelites had their Basic Training.

  1. He taught the people that he was the only way to Salvation. (Exodus 15)
  2. He taught them that man does not live by bread alone. (Deuteronomy 8:3)
  3. He taught them the Law and the Commandments.
  4. He organized them into 4 army divisions.
  5. He instilled obedience into them. (Exodus 16)
  6. He tested their faith. (Exodus 17)
  7. He tested their courage. (Numbers 13-14)

So God tested and trained the Israelites many times in the Desert of Sinai. And ultimately,
God put the Israelites to the final test of faith and courage. He told Moses to send out
spies to view the Promised Land and the spies came back and reported that the cities had
great walls and that the enemies were to strong to defeat. Unfortunately the people
rebelled against God and Moses and wanted to make them a captain and return to Egypt.
(Numbers 13-14)

Because of their lack of faith and trust in God, the Israelites failed their training. And God
would not allow that whole generation to cross over into the Promised Land, with the
exception of Joshua and Caleb because they had faith and courage. The Israelites
wandered in the desert for forty years until that faithless generation died off and the next
generation became mature and well able to fight.

We must learn from their mistakes in the wilderness and not repeat them. When God tests
our love, obedience, faith, and courage, let’s make him proud! So, that the Lord can say
to us, “Well done my good and faithful servant.”
